Biting the Bullet - Maybe

Taking shortcuts to save time and effort is not always the best course of action. I think in my desire to "fix" the many issues I am having with my game I have made things worse. I have tweaked everything with every tool at my disposal, simPE, Clean Installer, etc. and I think I have caused more problems than solved them. Honestly I think I might be better off reinstalling, something I really really wanted to avoid but may not be able to at this point.

I am definitely not the first person to moan about their downloads folder. It isn't the size of the folder so much as it is the individual files. I've jacked it back up to almost 9 gigs and with over 42,000 files that is too much. I have a ridiculous amount of recolors of mailboxes, trash cans, and whatnot which has gotten me to the point that packaging lots just compounds it. There are files I don't even recognize but they keep showing up. Ever see those recolors with the _0002, _0003 and on and on at the end? WTF??? It is nearly impossible to know what to delete and what to keep.

How did I end up making such a mess? I can't even organize them anymore since I have NO IDEA what I have. I suppose I can afford to lose "stuff" in the process. It isn't like I know what each of those over 42,000 files are. I don't know what will break as a result but I know I can't go on like this. I can't even move my people back into their homes anymore. Things are missing. Lots are crashing or lagging. My university NB was the only NB that ran smoothly and now it is a mess.

And don't even get me started on the clothing that got ruined because of sexy feet. I want to redo them on a proper mesh. Yeah right, like when??? And with so little spare time to try and fix it, shortcuts were my friend...or not apparently. I don't even want to try and reinstall things because it just makes it worse. I cannot start over. That isn't even an option. And there is no easy and safe way to cull downloads. Talk about a catch-22...and yet I continue to download crap...

Forgive my moping. I'm just very frustrated and needed to vent. Let me return you to your regular programming.

  1. Oh you poor thing. I know it is frustrating but a reinstall may not be a bad idea. Or at least (and I know you are tired of programs) you could sort out the duplicates and orphans with Delphy's Download Organizer and set them aside until you figure out what they are.

  2. I don't think I can use Delphy's Organizer...and I am sure other people do this with success...but I read somewhere that it corrupts files that have been compressorized so I am a little wary of trying it.

I didn't mean to whine about my problems and I know you have been through this yourself, in fact I was thinking of you as I wrote this, but I may just have to start clean.

The down side is that I have some updates I would really like to shoot for Chameleon and I cannot get into Mel's lot. And I never backed it up after I redecorated it.

  3. Ugh, I understand your pain. Let's curse the creators for making so many awesome and handy objects that you sort of HAVE to download them.

I don't trust Delphy's Download Organizer. It also gives a lot of false positives for orphans.

  4. I've had some luck with DDO in the past and I don't ever EVER delete the so-called orphans but it helped when I was trying to organize the mess in the first place. Now, since I have compressed everything, I am afraid that I will make things worse. I'm still mulling things over...and of course I found a set I want to use for the climax chapter of Chameleon that will choke the life out of my game. Luckily that is a long way down the road.

And believe me, I am not complaining about CC. I wouldn't be in this mess if I didn't find so much gorgeous stuff that I have to have.

  5. Blah! I feel ya! I had to do a complete CC dump and start over because my game was taking WAY too long to load! Now it's up and running in less than 10 minutes. I just dumped a lot of old CC that I never used. I did have to dump all my old house CC back into the game because I needed it! Thankfully my game wasn't borking as bad as yours!:( I hope you find a work around for the present time!

  6. Gayl I am so sorry and completely feel you in all of this, I had to Re-install with the LT and now I downloaded something somewhere and am back at 12gb... Again.... *Sigh* unfortunately I have no real option it's all for houses and sims that I have to have it and now all my townies flash black, green or blue and the organizer, etc hasnt worked. Do I want to re-install again NO!!!

Until then I really hope everything works out for you, especially regarding the loss of so many important and in that case unimportant things. 80)

  7. Phoenix doing a CC dump would kill my world. I use things I could never replace. I mean rally use them. I just think sometimes the issue is deeper.

Cherie I can totally see how you need CC with those gorgeous lots of yours. I'm sure it will all work out.

    Thanks both of you!

In Perfect Harmony

In June of 2007 I posted my first chapter of Dark December. Since that time, the story has evolved and changed in part through a collaboration that developed and lasted over 4 years. During this time a friendship was forged. Thank you Beth, for unwavering friendship, support, and generosity over these last 4+ years. It has been a journey I will never forget.

In dreams, the sun sets in our eyes
In dreams, we'll never be apart
In dreams, I'll promise you'll never be alone
How much I wish your voice could send me home
