The Other Side of the Stage ~ Update!

Before I get to that I want to ramble a bit about my Saturday. My oldest son will be attending school in Santa Cruz which is on the California coast. I went down to see where he was going to live (along with taking a care package and my expertise at setting up a wireless router) and decided to drive along Highway 1 which runs along the Pacific Coast. It did not take long for me to remember why I love living here so much. From the drive through an incredible tree lined highway, passing pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, wineries, nurseries, and ranches to the blanket of fog as I reached Half Moon Bay where the ocean is a pale grayish blue.

Along the highway there were many sand dunes and drifting sand and you can literally pull over and step into the ocean in some spots. When I finally hit the Santa Cruz county line at Pidgeon Point, to the right is Big Basin Redwood Park and the fog lifts turning the Pacific a brilliant combination of sapphire blue and emerald green. Amazing. I did not have my camera but I grabbed a couple of shots with my cell. If they look remotely decent I will upload them.

Surfers, wind sailing, kites speckled the coast and I could smell the fresh salt air. I can't recall a more relaxing drive or day. And yet another reminder of why I love living here. The house he will share in Santa Cruz is 2 blocks from the Pacific and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Lucky boy.

I remember when we were remodeling our house that we lived in my grandfather's house in San Francisco in the Sunset District which is 4 blocks from Ocean Beach. On winter days you could see the most amazing sunsets over the ocean and although the beach was dirty, cold, littered with broken bottles, trash, and the occasional used syringe we would walk down there on nice days, usually November or December. The best summers are winters in San Francisco, they say. But the beaches further down the coast are cleaner, some public and some state beaches, but all inviting.

Sorry for the walk down memory lane and that rather lengthy ramble but I've wanted to write that since last night. For those of you who made it through without hitting your drowsy heads on your keyboards, here is the link to Chapter 22 titled Dischord.

EDITED: Adding pathetic shots from my cell. It does not do the place justice but this was a treat all the way down to SC. The speckles in the sky are kites and in the ocean are a couple of surfers and many windsurfers.

  2. I was enthralled by your description, wonderful! I have been or driven through 39 out of 50 states, have never been to California. It sounds...heavenly. But I am partial to coastal living, being born and raised in the maritime provinces of Canada!
    Cheers!

  3. I should have actually said that Big Basin is on the left of Pidgeon Point, whose lighthouse (I could not pull over fast enough to get a shot and blame my lead foot) is on the right.

It takes much longer to do it but if you are headed to Southern California from here the Pacific Coast highway is the way to go. And some of the beaches in southern CA are really really beautiful.

My words would have been much more descriptive if I had written this post on Saturday night instead of Sunday.

  5. the photos are wonderful!

and yes, the beaches around San Diego are beautiful. if I had a billion dollars, and I think that is what it would take, I would buy a place on Coronoda Island. maybe not spelled right. although I was there in late August once and it was not exactly hot. actually it was kind of chilly.

  6. Yeah the only thing that saddens me is the cost of living here and the fact that driving down there frequently with the price of gas will be hard.

Well we have to look for the light in everything so I guess the beauty of the place will have to be my light.

  7. Those shots are from a cell phone? They are lovely! I cannot wait to get home next month, walk on the beach, hear the waves crash, the gulls cawing...*sob*

  8. Thanks Karen! I wish the colors were more accurate. The shots don't do the ocean justice. Next time I will have my camera with me.

I love walking along the ocean. I love being on the ocean and hearing the sounds of the waves and feel the waves play along my legs. Just love it.

  10. Hi Gayl, I sent Beth an email saying how much I'm enjoying the stories here. They are just wonderful, and I thank you for sharing your talents! They've inspired me to try storyboarding myself. I was telling her that the first thing I saw on the Home Page were the pics of Gabriel in the Bath. Oh My! He's gorgeous! And those shots are works of Art! I recognized Louis' Slim BB mesh, but I was wondering about the skin. Beth didn't know if you wanted to share, but she said I could always ask and sent me here. If you'd rather not, I understand completely. I'll happily keep visiting, there's more I need to read and look at. Thank you again for your amazing work!
    Sincerely, Lenore

  11. Hello Lenore! Sure I will be happy to share the skin with you. I am so glad you found Beth's work; she is wonderful and it is sheer joy collaborating with her.

I'll send it along some time today. I am just finishing up some shots and then I will get in and locate the file for you!

In Perfect Harmony

In June of 2007 I posted my first chapter of Dark December. Since that time, the story has evolved and changed in part through a collaboration that developed and lasted over 4 years. During this time a friendship was forged. Thank you Beth, for unwavering friendship, support, and generosity over these last 4+ years. It has been a journey I will never forget.

"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain."

In dreams, the sun sets in our eyes
In dreams, we'll never be apart
In dreams, I'll promise you'll never be alone
How much I wish your voice could send me home
